Born in Germany in 1819 one of 12 children, he completed seminary in Augsburg before traveling to the US where he entered the Redemptorist novitiate and was ordained in 1844. At his first parish in Pittsburg, he was Inspired by St. John Neumann, a Redemptorist missionary priest and his spiritual director, to serve German immigrants. Assigned to parishes in Pittsburgh, Detroit, Baltimore and New Orleans, he became a full-time itinerant missionary preacher traveling throughout the US. Known as an expert confessor and spiritual director, the “Cheerful Ascetic,” the “American Wonderworker,” the “Doctor of Souls,” for his intercession in healing bodies and souls. Died at 48 in 1867 in New Orleans after contracting yellow fever from caring for disease victims.
