Born in 1797 in Bavaria during turbulent times. Encouraged by her parish priest to become a teacher, she strongly believed a child’s need for love, safety and food were as important as formation education, “Let us never forget the love of Jesus for children, whom He took upon his lap and blessed.” By age 15 she was gifted educator whose encouraging acceptance of children soon made her a beloved teacher. With her bishop, she gradually recognized God’s call to found a religious community in order to respond to this need. Taking the name Mary Theresa of Jesus she founded the School Sisters of Notre Dame to bring order and mission of educating girls in America following the wave of German immigration; within a year they were established in seven cities. At the time of her death in 1879, her congregation numbered more than 2500, meeting the needs of girls in elementary schools, orphanages, industrial schools, day nurseries and pioneered the development of Kindergarten.
