An altar server is a lay assistant to the priest during Mass and other Church services, not to be confused with acolyte. Pre-Vatican II, the acolyte was the highest of the minor orders: lighting altar candles, carrying candles in procession, assisting deacons and ministering water/wine to the priest at Mass; wearing either an alb or surplice over a cassock, the order was conferred on a seminarian at a minor ordination. After order changes in 1972, the acolyte survived but became a lay ministry. Post-Vatican II, the altar server does the above duties, but an acolyte added responsibilities. Traditionally only male altar servers or acolytes, until the Vatican allowed female altar servers in 1994.
Made of wood, felt, ribbon, and handmade accessories. Includes tag and card with Saint's biography and description. Approximately 4" tall. Packaged in cellophane bag. Shipped in box with bubble wrap.
