Elimilech (“My God is King”) decides to move his family out of the Promised Land to Moab because of a severe famine. Naomi’s husband died and left her with sons, who broke the Mosaic law and took Moabite women as their wives, Orpah and Ruth (Israelites were not to intermarry with foreign women). After 10 years, her sons died; Naomi returns to Bethlehem with Ruth, trekking up to 70 miles. Upon her return, Naomi blames all her problems on God, “The Lord’s hand has turned against me.” Moabite Ruth seems to believe in Naomi’s God more than Naomi, laboring in the wheat fields to support the two of them. There Ruth meets Boaz, who marry and provide Naomi with her first grandchild. “Naomi took the child, placed him on her lap, and took care of him.” They named him Obed, who became the father of Jesse, the father of David in the line of Christ.

Made of wood, felt, ribbon, and handmade accessories. Worked primarily with the Huron for over 15 years (with the exception of 1629-33 in France) under challenging circumstances, learning the language and culture; his gift for Native American languages allowed him to teach missionaries and French traders. His progress in conversions was slow - not until 1635 did 14 Huron agree to be baptized, with 86 converts the following year. By 1640 nearly half the Huron had died from smallpox, and seeing the Jesuits unaffected by the disease, many began to listen to their teachings, appearing men of great power. Hebrews 5-7 notes the eternal nature of the order, quoting the Psalm verse to the supremacy of Jesus as the Great High Priest, using Melchizedek’s role to illustrate Jesus’ priesthood and kingship. Teacher, priest, grandparent gift.

The King of Judah from 640-609 BC, his reign documented in 2 Kings 22-23 and 2 Chronicles 34-35. The son of King Amon and grandson of Kin Manasseh – both wicked kings of Judah – he was one of world’s youngest kings, beginning his reign at 8 after his father’s assassination. A godly king, Josiah is introduced, “And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and walked in all the way of David his father, and he did not turn aside to the right or to the left.” In the 18th year of his reign, he raised money to repair the temple, and during the repairs the high priest Hilkiah found the Torah, the Book of the Law. When it was read to Josiah, the king tore his clothes, a sign of mourning and repentance. He called for a time of national repentance. The Law was read to the people and a covenant was made between them and the Lord. Many reforms followed, with the temple cleansed of pagan worship and idolatrous places demolished. He restored the observance of the Passover. Died in battle against Egypt.

Made of wood, felt, ribbon, and handmade accessories. Teacher, priest, grandparent gift.

From the Book of Genesis, the 4th of six sons of Jacob and Leah and the founder of the Tribe of Judah of the Israelites - by extension, the Kingdom of Judah, the land of Judea, and the word Jew. Through Judah (whose name means “thanksgiving” or “praise”) would come a powerful line of kings, a nation of its own right, and the salvation of the world in Jesus Christ. Jacob declares “Judah, your brothers shall praise you…Judah is a lion’s cub; from the prey you have gone up…The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet.” (Gen 49: 8-10). However, initially, Judah is an angry young man, with bitterness from family circumstances and a hardened heart, suggesting his brother Joseph be sold into slavery. He marries a Canaanite woman against God’s will; his indifference continues into adulthood until God sends another woman, Tamar, to convict him of his wickedness. His transformation is documented when he offers himself to protect his youngest brother Benjamin in Egypt.

Made of wood, felt, ribbon, and handmade accessories. Declared King of Castile at 18, advised and assisted by his mother. Married Princess Beatrice, daughter of Philip of Saubia, King of Germany, and had 7 sons and 3 daughters. His father turned against him, trying to take over his rule, but the two reconciled later and successfully fought off the Moors. With prayer and fasting in preparation for war – and extremely devoted to the Blessed Virgin – he held back Islamic invaders in 1225. In 1234 he conquered the city of Cordoba from the Moors and overtook Seville. A great administrator of the code of laws and a man of deep faith, founded hospitals, monasteries, churches and cathedrals. Teacher, priest, grandparent gift.

Born the son of a Roman named Rusticus, he was elected Pope to succeed Pope St. Mark (whose reign was only 9 mo) in 337. The Church was in a troubled state due to Arian agitators whose heresy had been condemned at Nicea, but were deceiving Emperor Constantine of their true character; when he died, his sons divided the Empire. Julias was soon involved in the Arian controversy when Eusebius of Nicomedia opposed the return of the exiled Athanasius (who has been the object of Arian persecution for some time) as Bishop of Alexandria. On his 2nd banishment, St. Athanasius came to Rome, was recognized as the rightful Bishop by a Synod of bishops, and in a letter to Eusebian reinstated him in 340. The matter wasn’t settled until the Council of Sardica (Sofia) that any deposed Bishop had the right of appeal to the Pope in Rome; it also declared Athanasius as orthodox and deposed certain Arian bishops. Pope Julius I also set December 25 as the date of the Birth of Jesus. Died in 352. Feast Day: April 12

Made of wood, felt, ribbon, and handmade accessories. Baptized by St. Colman, he was the first person to bring Christianity to Ireland, before St. Patrick, though only locally. Declan first embarks on a journey to Rome where he studied and was ordained a bishop by the Pope, and meets his fellow countryman St. Ailbe of Emly. Legend has it that a golden bell miraculously appeared when he was celebrating Mass after being made the first bishop of Ardmore; when his companion forgot the precious bell, it was ferried back on a huge stone that floated across the sea back to Ardmore (St. Declan’s Stone). On returning to Ireland he met St. Patrick and together they agree on their mission in Ireland. Patrick encourages Declan to found the monastery at Ardmore; his nearby well, known as “the waters of St. Declan” still has healing properties. A friend of St. Patrick and St. David of Wales, he died in 450 “in a narrow place beside the sea” called Declan’s Desert. Patron of Ardmore, Ireland. Yet it was our pain that he bore, our sufferings he endured. But he was pierced for our sins, crushed for our iniquity. He bore the punishment that makes us whole, by his wounds we were healed. But the LORD laid upon him*the guilt of us all. Though harshly treated, he submitted and did not open his mouth; Like a lamb led to slaughter or a sheep silent before shearers, he did not open his mouth. Seized and condemned, he was taken away. For he was cut off from the land of the living, struck for the sins of his people. He was given a grave among the wicked, a burial place with evildoers, Though he had done no wrong, nor was deceit found in his mouth. By making his life as a reparation offering, he shall see his offspring, shall lengthen his days, and the LORD’s will shall be accomplished through him. Because of his anguish he shall see the light; because of his knowledge he shall be content; My servant, the just one, shall justify the many, their iniquity he shall bear.
